The children in Year 1 are incredibly excited about their new topic of the Big City, Bright Lights this term. We will be learning all about the wonderful city of London and its famous attractions. We started off with an exciting invitation to tea from the Queen and we had to dress in our smartest clothes for this. We ate scrumptious sandwiches, dainty cakes, delectable scones with jam and cream and sipped fizzy lemonade and some of us even drank tea from a cup and saucer. We had to use an atlas to find a map of the United Kingdom and located the capital city of London and our town of Northampton. We then explored the countries that make United Kingdom, their capital cities and flags. We found it very interesting to see how the 3 flags made up the Union flag. Later on we will be learning about the Great Fire of London, all the fascinating animals that can be found in the London Zoo and comparing London to the capital city of Zambia, Lusaka.
In Maths, we have been learning about and practicing our counting and ordering numbers to and beyond 100 and counting in 2's. We are beginning to recognize if a number is odd or even. We had a lot of fun with the smartie challenge where we had to estimate how many we thought were in our box, count them to see if our guess was close and if we all had the same amount, sort and classify them according to their colours and then we placed them on a pictograph to see which colour we had the most or least of. We are looking forward to learning about division by sharing, fractions of 1/2 and 1/4 and 2D and 3D shapes and position and directions.
We have also been resilient with our SPaG where we are learning the skills to be a GREAT writer and have started learning how to use the conjunction "and" in a sentence to join up words or phrases. We will also be learning about adding -s or -es to sounds to make plurals and lots of practice using our sounds to spell difficult words. We will spend time practicing our common exception spelling words every week so that we know how to spell them by the end of Year 1.
